Everything once seemed
On the verge of wonderful
When you were cuddled
In my embrace
And we fell asleep
I had wished
We could stay that way
All night through
Without shoulder aching
The only respite
When I rolled away
You curled up beside me
Taking position
As the big spoon
To have your body
Against mine
Sharing warmth
Being one
Until dawn
But no longer
Not with how it played out
Two people far apart
A gulf of time and age
If it were all different
Just a bit different
It would be
It could be
Something else
We are
Who we are
When we are
And that is a bed
I’ve relegated myself to
